The women’s cell is upstairs from the men’s cell block in the old jail, and is much less forbidding, thanks to the natural light which shines through the hall windows.
The iron bars and massive padlock make this cell as much a fortress as the men’s quarters, though, and with its peeling walls and cramped dimensions, it could not have been an pleasant place to spend your days.
If no women were in residence, this cell was sometimes used for young men or boys to keep them separate from more hardened criminals in the men’s quarters.
