Vernon County Historical Society Annual Meeting & Winter Quarterly Program
“A Life in the Saddle: Memoirs of a Pioneer, Circuit Rider, and Missionary”

The Vernon County Historical Society kicks off 2025 with its annual membership meeting and election of board members. The general public is invited to hear guest speaker Brian Hogan talk about his new book A Life in the Saddle. The book is based on Brian’s great-great uncle, Rev. David Hogan’s personal memoirs of life in pre-Civil War Missouri, the California Gold Rush, and the Civil War period in Vernon County. Rev. Hogan lived near the present-day town of Deerfield in Vernon County and gave his name to Hogan’s Ford on Big Drywood Creek, site of an 1861 battle. Refreshments will be provided.

“Filling Harry’s Plate: Mid Century Modern Food through the Truman Years”

Award-winning author and foodways interpreter Suzanne Corbett takes a look at mid-20th century food trends during the term of President Harry Truman. She will explain how food defined 20th century American culture and describe dishes Harry Truman would have found on his plate from his days as a Missouri farm boy to the White House.
