“Lady Bushwhackers” were prominent in Missouri during the Civil War years, supporting their husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons who rode with the Bushwhacker guerrilla bands resisting Federal occupation of the state. They acted as scouts, spies, guides and mail handlers. Many of these women suffered deprivation, arrest, and exile from their homes as a result of their activities.
